Key Walk to School Products - News from Living Sreets

You have probably noticed the improvement to air quality, the lack of traffic and road noise and how much less stressful walking has been during lockdown. As we begin to go back work and school, I am sure you will join us on our mission hang on to the good things we discovered about cleaner air and better local environments.

Looking ahead to Autumn, Living Streets want to build on the momentum make the Walk to School movement a priority for schools!

WOW, Living Street’s flagship year-round walk to school challenge, is back for 2020-21! Resources can be ordered now to be delivered in September for a mid-September start. Alternatively, WOW can be ordered for and started at the beginning of any new term.

WOW is a pupil-led initiative where children self-report how they get to school every day using the interactive WOW Travel Tracker. If they travel sustainably (walk, cycle or scoot) once a week for a month, they get rewarded with a badge. It's that easy!

It's simple to run and children love talking part. Each year, the 11 WOW badges follow a new WOW theme, all of which are designed by pupils in our annual badge design competition. On average, WOW schools see a 30% REDUCTION IN CAR JOURNEYS taken to the school gate and a 23% INCREASE IN WALKING RATES.

Walk to School Week will now run w/c 5th October, in October’s International Walking Month. Resources can be ordered now to be delivered in September in time for an October start.

Our five-day walking challenge aimed at primary schools is a fun and engaging week-long activity, raising awareness and celebrating walking for all. Pupils will be well on their way to reaching their recommended 60 minutes minimum of physical activity per day before even reaching the school gates! Not only will it set them up for a positive day in the classroom, it will also help create healthy habits for life.

Little Feet is our walking challenge for early years. Resources can be ordered now and it can be used anytime but we suggest starting in October’s International Walking Month.

The set of fun and engaging activities in the walking packs cover two Early Years themes: ‘People who help us’ and ‘Minibeasts’. Each theme consists of a two-four week burst of activity and can be run back to back. Little Feet’s journey maps, stickers and educational games are designed to reward families for their walking journey and walking successes (cycling and scooting count too!) instilling healthy habits for life.

If any local authorities not yet on board are interested in offering funding for any of the above to a selection of targeted primary schools / early years settings in their area they can contact me and we can discuss how this would work. Living Streets would help with the recruitment, ongoing support and account management for all schools on board. I currently have this relationship with over 50 local authorities/ districts etc across the UK.
